A card printer is only as good as the ribbon and consumables feeding it. The wrong ribbon will not load, and unbranded stock can damage the print head and void your warranty. This guide explains how Fargo ribbons are named, how to match them to your printer, and what else you need to keep printing.
How Fargo ribbons are named
Most Fargo ribbon names are a code for the colour panels they contain:
- Y, M, C are the colour panels: yellow, magenta and cyan, which combine for full colour photos and graphics.
- K is a resin black panel, used for sharp text and barcodes.
- O is a clear overlay panel that protects the print.
So a YMCKO ribbon prints full colour with a protective overlay, the most common choice for photo ID cards. A YMCKOK ribbon adds a second black panel for printing black on both sides. A resin black ribbon prints single colour text and barcodes only, at a lower cost per card.
Matching the ribbon to your printer
Ribbons are printer specific. A DTC1250e ribbon will not fit a DTC4500e, and an HDP retransfer printer also needs transfer film as well as a ribbon. Always match the ribbon to your exact model. As a guide:
- HID Fargo DTC1250e uses DTC1250e ribbons such as YMCKO or YMCKOK.
- HID Fargo DTC1500 uses its own YMCKO and resin black ribbons.
- HID Fargo DTC4500e uses high yield DTC4500e ribbons.
- HID Fargo HDP5000e and HDP6600 need both a ribbon and retransfer film.
You can see the matching options in our card printer ribbons collection.
Understanding print yield
Ribbon yield is the number of cards a ribbon prints before it runs out. A YMCKO ribbon rated for 250 prints does roughly 250 full colour cards. A resin black ribbon stretches much further, often into the thousands, because it uses only one panel. Higher yield ribbons reduce reloading and lower your cost per card, which matters at volume. We factor this into our cost of ID card printing guide.
Do not forget cards, cleaning and film
A complete consumable kit usually includes:
- Blank cards, in standard CR-80 PVC, composite or technology cards for encoding.
- A printer cleaning kit, used regularly to protect the print head and keep output clean.
- Retransfer film, for HDP printers only, used alongside the ribbon.
- Lamination film, if your printer has a laminator for added durability and security.
Why genuine matters
Genuine HID Fargo consumables are engineered for the print head and produce consistent, warranty safe results. Unbranded or refilled ribbons are a common cause of streaking, head wear and failed warranty claims. Sourcing from an authorised partner means the ribbon in the box is the ribbon on the label.
