Zebra Mobile Computer Buying Guide
Choosing the right rugged device comes down to three things: the form factor your team needs, how it connects, and the data it has to capture. Whether your staff are scanning stock in a warehouse, taking payments in the field, or running point of sale on the shop floor, the guide below explains the differences that matter so you specify the right Zebra device the first time. Every unit we supply across South Africa is genuine Zebra hardware, backed by local support.
Handheld or tablet?
Pick a handheld mobile computer like the TC22 or TC27 when workers scan all day and need a pocketable device with a built-in barcode imager, for picking, price checks and proof of delivery. Choose the 8-inch ET401 enterprise tablet when you need a larger screen for point of sale, assisted selling, forms or dashboards. Both run Android with enterprise security and long support lifecycles.
TC22 or TC27: Wi-Fi or 5G?
The TC22 is Wi-Fi only, making it the cost-effective choice for indoor work where you have solid wireless coverage, such as retail, stockrooms and warehousing. The TC27 adds 5G and 4G cellular plus dual SIM, so field service, couriers and last-mile delivery teams stay connected beyond the four walls. Both share the same 6-inch display, scan engines and rugged build, so you can mix them on one platform.
Scanning and durability
For everyday 1D and 2D barcodes, the SE4710 standard-range imager is ideal. For warehouses where staff scan items in hand and high on a shelf, the SE55 advanced-range engine with IntelliFocus captures both without walking to the rack. All three devices are sealed to IP65 and IP68 and tested to MIL-STD-810H, surviving repeated 1.5 m drops to concrete, so they keep working in dust, rain and rough handling.
Charging and accessories
Keep devices ready for every shift with the right cradle. The TC22/TC27 single-slot cradle charges a handheld and a spare battery together, while the ET401 charge-only cradle docks and powers the tablet at a counter or back office. Standardising on cradles means a fully charged backup battery is always on hand and no device starts the day flat. Browse the full mobile computers range for the complete line-up.
