ID Card Printer Buying Guide

Choosing an ID card printer comes down to three things: how many cards you print, the type of card you issue, and the level of security you need. Whether you are printing a handful of staff badges each month or running a high-volume credential programme, the guide below explains the differences that matter so you buy the right machine the first time. Every printer we supply across South Africa is backed by local support, genuine consumables, and software.

Direct-to-card vs retransfer

Direct-to-card (DTC) printers such as the Zebra ZC300 and HID FARGO DTC1250e print the design straight onto the card surface. They are fast, have the lowest cost per card, and are ideal for everyday staff, student, and membership IDs. Retransfer printers like the HID FARGO HDP6600 print onto a clear film first and fuse it to the card, giving true edge-to-edge, photo-quality results and over-the-edge coverage on smart cards and uneven surfaces. Choose DTC for value and volume, retransfer for premium, secure, or technology cards.

Single-sided or dual-sided?

Single-sided printers print the front of the card only and keep your hardware cost down, which suits simple photo IDs and visitor badges. Dual-sided models print both sides automatically in one pass, so you can add terms and conditions, barcodes, a magnetic-stripe panel, or emergency contact details on the back without manual flipping. For anything beyond basic cards, dual-sided saves significant time at volume and looks more professional.

Encoding and security options

Many printers can be configured with on-board encoders so the card does more than identify a person. Add a magnetic stripe for swipe access, smart-card or contactless encoding for access control and cashless payment, or lamination and holographic overlays for tamper-resistant government and corporate credentials. Deciding on encoding up front avoids paying to retrofit later.

Top brands we stock

We are an authorised South African supplier for HID FARGO, Zebra, Entrust, Evolis, and Seaory. That ranges from the entry-level Seaory S25 and Evolis Badgy 200 for small offices and schools, through mid-volume Zebra ZC and HID FARGO DTC models, up to enterprise HID FARGO HDP and Entrust Sigma systems for government and large institutions. Buying through an authorised distributor protects your warranty and gives you genuine ribbons and support.
