Fingerprint Scanner Buying Guide
The right fingerprint scanner depends on the sensor technology, how it connects to your system, and the conditions it will work in. A reader for a clean office enrolment desk has very different requirements to one mounted on an outdoor door used by hundreds of people a day. This guide explains the choices so you can match a biometric reader to your application and budget, with local support across South Africa.
Optical vs multispectral
Optical sensors like the Futronic FS88H photograph the surface of the finger. They are accurate, affordable, and perfect for offices, enrolment desks, and controlled indoor use. Multispectral readers such as the Lumidigm M311 read both the surface and the layers just beneath the skin, so they still capture clean prints from fingers that are dry, wet, dirty, worn, or aged. If your users include manual workers, the elderly, or you operate outdoors, multispectral dramatically reduces failed reads.
USB reader or access control?
USB desktop scanners plug into a PC and are designed for enrolment, identity verification, and KYC at a workstation, capturing the fingerprint for your software to process. Standalone access-control units such as the Futronic Fin'Lock range run on their own, storing users on the device and unlocking a door or turnstile without a connected computer, often with MiFare card support as a backup. Decide whether you are capturing identities for a system, or controlling a physical door, because that changes the hardware entirely.
Software and integration
Some readers ship with capture software ready to use, while others provide a software development kit (SDK) for building the scanner into your own application, with drivers for Windows, Linux, and Android. Before buying, confirm that your time-and-attendance, access, or enrolment software supports the specific model, as this is the most common reason a scanner does not work as expected. If you are unsure how a reader connects to your system, our technical team can advise.
