ID Card Ribbon Buying Guide
The ribbon is the ink of card printing, and it has the biggest effect on both your print quality and your running costs. Buying the wrong ribbon is the single most common card-printing mistake, because ribbons are specific to each printer model and to the type of card you produce. This guide explains how to choose the right one every time.
Colour vs monochrome
YMCKO full-colour ribbons carry yellow, magenta, cyan, a black resin panel, and a clear overlay, and are used for photo ID cards. Monochrome ribbons print in a single colour (black, white, red, gold, and others) at a fraction of the cost per card, which is perfect for text-only badges and visitor passes. YMCKOK adds a second black panel so you can print full colour on the front and sharp black text or a barcode on the back of a dual-sided card.
Match it to your printer
Ribbons are not interchangeable between brands or even between models in the same brand. A HID FARGO ribbon will not fit a Zebra or Entrust printer, and using the wrong one causes jams, error messages, and wasted ribbon. Always order by your exact printer model number, which is printed on the machine and on your original invoice.
Genuine ribbons and yield
Every ribbon has a rated yield, commonly 200, 250, or 500 prints, and matching that to your monthly volume keeps your cost per card predictable. Genuine, branded ribbons are formulated for the printhead and protect your warranty, while non-genuine ribbons can void it and shorten printhead life. The small saving on a cheap ribbon rarely covers the cost of a damaged printhead.
Specialty and security ribbons
Beyond standard colour and mono, specialty ribbons add security and branding. Holographic and clear overlay panels make cards harder to copy, UV fluorescent panels print a mark only visible under ultraviolet light, and scratch-off panels hide PINs or codes. These are widely used for access credentials, gift cards, and government IDs where authenticity matters.
